WHAT IS OSTEOPATHY ?
Osteopathy is NOT a new rehabilitation. Osteopathy is NOT
similar to physiotherapy or chiropractic; it is it's OWN rehabilitation
Osteopathy was created back in the 1800's. Osteopathy is rarely
advertised due to the extensive clientele and waiting lists osteopath's
have. It is a rehabilitation that truly helps find the cause of your problem
rather than focussing on treating your symptoms. The only downside of
this, is that it does not expose osteopathy enough to the general public.
Osteopathy is a very gentle hands on approach in restoring motion
and function back to the body. This occurs not only to the muscles,
bones and ligaments but also to the organs, fluids and nerves of the
The osteopath looks at the whole body, rather than focussing on only
where your symptoms of pain are. Majority of time, the area of where
a patients symptoms are, is usually not where the problem is.
Osteopathy is designed to find the cause and treat the cause, so that
your symptoms are gone. This enables the patient to get back to their
normal lifestyle prior to their aches and pains without the "maintenance"
For example, one of the more common conditions that John treats
are digestive issues such as IBS/ Acid Reflux or Constipation.
Although the area of pain may be centred around the abdomen or
stomach, John treats the above mentioned symptoms by assessing the
musculo-skeletal system, mobilization of the liver and associated
organs to increase their mobility and function. This, along with manually
treating the circulation and neural function of
the abdomen and spine will improve the symptoms that are labelled
"IBS" / Constipation / Bloating or Acid Reflux".
WHO CAN BENEFIT FROM OSTEOPATHY and WHAT
CAN AN OSTEOPATH TREAT ?
Osteopathy is a profession that treats ALL individuals ranging from
babies, athletes to the elderly. Due to its gentle approach with precise
palpation and mobilizations, all different age groups benefit from
The name Osteopathy is quite deceiving because when you hear the
term, one would automatically think bone. However, Osteopathy rarely
focuses only on bone and leans more on how the body works together
as a whole. For example, Osteopaths are focussed on mobilizing the
organs of your body through gentle techniques where so many times
they have more of a direct influence on the muscles / bones and nerves
of the body. This is why so many traditional therapies do not work and
put their patients on a "maintenance" program. In Johns opinion,
"maintenance" programs should not exist. This is only a term used
when the cause of a problem is never found.
Here are Some of the commonConditions that Osteopathy treats:
- Lower Back Pain, Mid Back Pain
- Neck Pain and more common whiplash
- Sciatica / Spinal Disc Herniations
- Pinched Nerves of the spine
- Vertigo and Ringing in the ears
Some of the unexpected conditions very successful with Osteopathy:
- Constipation/ Diarrhea/ Chronic Bloating
- Irritable Bowel Syndrom/ Chron's Disease
- Asthma and related Heart Conditions
- Thyroid, Pituitary and Adrenal phsyiological and hormonal
connections; which quite often gets labeled as Fibromyalgia.
ARE OSTEOPATHY TREATMENTS PAINFUL?
Osteopathy is not painful at all. Majority of patients are amazed at
its gentle approach and the success they feel because of such subtle
and gentle movements.

been treated by John.
WHAT TO EXPECT FROM YOUR FIRST VISIT
Your first visit will consist of a thorough head to toe examination
while considering the primary problem that a patient may be coming in
for. Osteopaths believe that pain and symptoms usually come from
somewhere else in the body that is restricted. For example, although
a patient is assessed for lower back pain, the osteopath will also ensure
proper mobility, position and functioning of one's neck, midback,
shoulders and even associated organs.
Expect to be at your assessment for approximately 1 to 11/2 hours.
Usually loose clothing like active wear is best to allow for the osteopath
to mobilize the body. Some treatment is combined with the assessment
and educational advice regarding exercises are given.
Follow up treatments are dependent upon the severity of conditions.
However, osteopathy is so long lasting and effective, that treatments are
followed up every two to three week intervals in John's clinic. Patients
are quite often impressed with the less frequency of appointments due
to the success of how they are feeling.
ARE EXERCISES GIVEN DURING OSTEOPATHY
Exercises and stretches are definitely given after osteopathy
treatments. At Osteopathy and Sports Injury, John's treatments are
usually one hour long and then takes the time to demonstrate the
appropriate exercises and stretches to compliment what is being done
in the clinic. Expect your appointment(s) over one hour.
Please do not hesitate to contact John if there are any questions or
detailed information you may want to know regarding how osteopathy
